As Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day on June 12, a leading real estate firm, Urban Living Development Limited, has called for stronger collaboration between government and private developers to address the country’s deepening housing deficit and promote inclusive urban growth.
In a joint statement issued on Thursday, the firm’s Managing Director and Founder, Mr. John Oyedepo, and its Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Olawale Aremu, stressed that true democratic progress must be measured not just by electoral milestones, but by the living conditions and environments provided for citizens.
“Democracy is not just about political freedom; it must translate to physical spaces where people can live, grow, and dream in dignity,” Oyedepo said.
The company argued that Nigeria’s journey toward democratic maturity will remain incomplete without meaningful investment in affordable housing, basic infrastructure, and inclusive community planning. They described the housing crisis as both a social and democratic concern, with millions of Nigerians still living without access to liveable, secure spaces.
Aremu added that Urban Living’s approach to development focuses on functionality, sustainability, and community wellbeing, positioning housing as a human right and a foundation for economic opportunity.
“Every citizen deserves to live in a well-planned, affordable, and secure environment. This is why our developments focus on functionality, community, and sustainability,” he said.

While acknowledging government efforts in setting policy direction, Oyedepo underscored the vital role of the private sector in driving innovation and delivery at scale. He called for public-private synergy that prioritises long-term urban transformation over short-term fixes.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, we at Urban Living are reminded that the quality of life we build for our people is just as important as the systems we vote for,” Oyedepo noted.
Reaffirming its commitment to the nation’s urban future, the company pledged to build communities rooted in integrity and excellence, driven by the values that democracy upholds.
“This Democracy Day, we renew our pledge to build for people, not just profit. We will continue to drive the real estate industry with integrity, excellence, and the boldness that democracy gives us,” the statement concluded.
Urban Living also urged policymakers to place housing and urban planning at the heart of the democratic agenda, asserting that dignity and opportunity should be accessible to all Nigerians, regardless of income or background.
