President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday,June 17, laid the foundation for a new headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to deepen Nigeria’s democracy through stronger electoral institutions.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Tinubu described the project as a major stride in bolstering electoral transparency and administrative capacity.
“This new INEC building will serve as a hub for innovation, planning, training, and transparency in electoral administration,” the President said.
Highlighting the evolving nature of democracy in Nigeria, Tinubu noted that institutional development must match its growth.
He assured that his government would continue to support INEC, not only through infrastructure but by providing the legal frameworks, policies, and resources required for the commission to function effectively.

He praised Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike for driving the initiative. “This is another important step towards the protection of our democracy in this country,” Tinubu said.
The President commended Wike’s “vision, courage, and commitment to national progress and development,” and also lauded the leadership of the FCT Administration and INEC staff for their dedication to democratic growth.
In a pointed message to contractors and project stakeholders, Tinubu urged them to approach the job with a sense of national duty.
“You are not just building an edifice; you are building trust in our nation,” he declared, adding that “quality, speed, integrity, and transparency” must guide their work.
He closed by reminding Nigerians that “democracy is not a destination but a journey,” calling for unity in strengthening institutions and protecting the country’s democratic future.
