The Nigerian government says it is working to ease the suffering of its citizens and believes the worst may soon be over.
This assurance came from the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during an interview on Channels Television on the 18th of June, 2025.
Idris pointed to several efforts by the Tinubu administration, including over 900,000 Nigerians benefiting from the presidential loan and grant scheme, about 300,000 students gaining access to loans through a new student scheme, and the clearance of more than ₦10 billion in foreign exchange debt.
Despite these claims, Nigeria’s debt burden continues to grow. Hunger and economic hardship remain widespread, with many Nigerians questioning when relief will come.
When asked when citizens would begin to feel the positive impact of these policies, the minister responded, “The pain will end soon. Already, it’s beginning to subside a bit. I mean, you saw that if you compare food prices now to where they were a year ago. I mean, you know how much you buy a bag of rice.”
He acknowledged that things are not yet fully back on track but maintained that there has been consistent movement in the right direction.

“We are not saying that we are there yet, but we are saying there is a steady progression towards the destination, the prosperity that Mr president has promised Nigerians. It’s not something that will happen overnight. But even the rating agencies are saying, look, the indices are looking good for Nigeria. Everyone is seeing that.”
Idris went further to say, “I believe that we’ll soon have that sorted out. It’s gradual. I mean, nobody has, I mean, the President never said that our problems are over. He never said that. I’m not going to sit here to say that our problems are over, but what I can say is that there is a gradual journey towards the prosperity that Mr. President has promised.”
