The Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned a rumour circulating about the alleged resignation of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
They described the rumour as a deliberate plot to stir religious tensions and disrupt national stability.
Speaking to journalists in Kaduna on the 30th of June, 2025, Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. John Joseph Hayab, dismissed the false claim that Akume had been replaced by Hadiza Bala Usman.
He said the report was designed to provoke unrest in a country already dealing with deep religious and political divides.
Rev. Hayab pointed out that the Christian population in Northern Nigeria has always had concerns about the Muslim-Muslim composition of the presidency.
For them, Akume represents a critical voice of inclusion in national leadership.
His removal, or even a suggestion of it, would be seen as a serious threat to both national unity and religious tolerance.
He said, “At a time when our country needs healing, national cohesion, and responsible leadership, it is disheartening that some individuals are toying with sensitive issues by spreading outright falsehood. Senator Akume is one of the few visible Christian figures in the federal executive, and his service has been marked by maturity, integrity, and dedication to national development.”
CAN warned that the rumour wasn’t just irresponsible but also part of a wider effort to push Christians out of federal governance. If left unchecked, it could have triggered unnecessary conflict between religious groups.
Rev. Hayab urged security agencies to trace the source of the fake news and bring the perpetrators to book. He emphasized that protecting truth and promoting peace are duties every Nigerian should take seriously.
He added, “The intention behind this propaganda is clear. Some people are not comfortable with peaceful coexistence and are determined to exploit religion and ethnicity for political gains. That must not be allowed to succeed.”

Despite the attack, Hayab encouraged Akume to stay focused and not be distracted by such schemes. He said the Northern Christian community is solidly behind him and continues to pray for his success in office.
Akume’s presence in government, according to him, brings comfort to Christians who often feel excluded.
He also praised the quick response from the Presidency through Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.
The timely denial of the rumour, he said, helped to calm nerves and reinforce public confidence.
Rev. Hayab called on the federal government to ensure fairness, justice, and inclusiveness in its appointments and policies.
“The unity of Nigeria depends on leadership that recognises our diversity and governs with the fear of God. We expect the President to remain vigilant and committed to the values that hold our nation together,” he said.
