CONTROVERSY: YABATECH Denies Ex-Student Entry Over Hairstyle

A viral video is sparking outrage and debate after a former student of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) was allegedly denied entry into the institution’s Epe campus because of his Afro hairstyle.

The video, posted by X user @DammieDammie35, shows the young man visibly upset as he explains how campus security has consistently refused him entry, citing his hair as the reason. “They said my hair is not acceptable,” he said in the video. “For more than a week now, I haven’t been able to go in — and I have a business worth N2 million on campus.”

The incident has ignited discussions about dress codes, personal freedom, and discrimination within academic institutions in Nigeria.

While YABATECH has not issued an official response, social media users are demanding accountability and clearer policies regarding grooming standards — especially for ex-students and entrepreneurs operating on campus.

Critics argue that in a modern, diverse society, institutions should be more inclusive and avoid enforcing arbitrary rules that stifle self-expression.
