Ganduje Appointed FAAN Board Chairman Days After Resigning as APC National Leader

In a swift political rebound that has stirred both interest and debate, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been inaugurated as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), barely a week after his resignation from the party leadership.

The formal inauguration, held in Abuja, was presided over by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, signaling what officials described as a “new era of strategic transformation” for Nigeria’s aviation landscape.

Ganduje’s sudden re-emergence in a prominent federal role has left many observers reading between the lines of Nigeria’s ever-fluid political power play.

His resignation from the APC chairmanship had sparked speculation of political sidelining.

But with this new appointment, the 74-year-old politician is back in the limelight — this time in the aviation sector.

Minister Keyamo, while addressing the gathering of aviation stakeholders and government officials, emphasized the weight of national expectation riding on the new board.

“This is not just a ceremonial change,” Keyamo said. “It’s a reset button for FAAN. We are counting on this team to prioritize safety, efficiency, and global best practices as we push toward developing world-class aviation infrastructure.”

He further lightened the moment with a joke aimed at Ganduje’s political clout:

“He will just press one button, and money will come out,” the minister quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.

In his acceptance remarks, Ganduje thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the confidence placed in him and promised to steer the agency with “purposeful leadership.”

“We will study the FAAN Act thoroughly to ensure harmony between the board, management, and the supervising ministry. This is about service, structure, and a shared vision,” he said, aligning his mission with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He also stressed the importance of staff attitude, regulatory discipline, and enhancing the image of Nigeria’s airports on the global stage.

Joining Ganduje on the board are seven other members drawn from critical government agencies and institutions:

Engr. T. P. Vembe (Federal Ministry of Aviation)

Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku (FAAN MD/CEO)

Ms. Dorothy Duruak (Ministry of Culture and Tourism)

Ahmed Ibrahim Suleiman (Ministry of Defence)

Engr. Nasiru Muazu (Nigerian College of Aviation Technology)

Dr. Omozojie Okoboh (Federal Ministry of Justice)

Mrs. Bridget Gold (FAAN Legal Services)

FAAN CEO Mrs. Kuku praised the appointment of the new board, saying it would usher in a new chapter for Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“We are set for realignment and progress. This team brings capacity, vision, and the right connections to move the needle,” she said.

While some industry analysts have welcomed Ganduje’s experience and administrative background, critics view the appointment as part of Nigeria’s recurring trend of political recycling — where key figures reappear in influential roles, often without sector-specific expertise.

Nonetheless, the immediate focus now shifts to the impact the new board can make amid Nigeria’s growing demands for airport modernization, better passenger experience, and international safety compliance.
