Peter Obi Mourns Buhari, Calls His Passing National Loss

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed his condolences over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the news as a deeply solemn moment for the country.

Reacting to the development via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi acknowledged Buhari’s dignified conduct throughout his leadership and said his death was not only a personal loss to his family but also a national one.

“I have just received the very sad news of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari in London,” Obi wrote. “His death provides a solemn moment, not just for his family and close associates, but for our nation as a whole.”

He praised the late president’s composure in leadership and extended heartfelt sympathies to Buhari’s widow, Aisha, his children, the wider family, and the entire Nigerian population.

“May Almighty Allah, Most Gracious and Most Merciful, forgive President Buhari’s shortcomings, reward his efforts in service to the nation, and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus. Ameen,” Obi concluded.

The former president passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital after a prolonged illness. Tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and the international community, reflecting on Buhari’s legacy as both a military and civilian leader.

Obi’s message adds to the growing national grief as preparations are underway for Buhari’s return and state burial, with the Federal Government already declaring a week of national mourning.
