The Super Falcons of Nigeria held a minute of silence on Sunday, July 13, to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier in the day.
The tribute took place ahead of Nigeria’s match against Algeria at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), currently underway in Morocco.
The Nigerian team, nine-time champions of the tournament, bowed their heads on the pitch as a mark of respect before kickoff.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, died at the age of 82 in London. His death was announced by his former media aide, Bashir Ahmad.
Buhari made history in 2015 as the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president in Nigeria’s electoral history, a feat that marked a turning point in the country’s democratic evolution.
His passing has drawn condolences from political leaders, citizens, and institutions across the nation.
