The Special Adviser on Transportation to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Sola Giwa, has revealed that Lagos State loses about N1 trillion yearly due to the severe impact of daily traffic jams on worker productivity.
He said commuters in Lagos spend an average of six hours each day stuck in traffic.
Giwa shared this information on Tuesday, the 15th of July, 2025, during the launch of the Second Lagos Traffic Conference held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island.
The event also marked 25 years of operations by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
He stated that recent interventions by LASTMA had helped the state regain around N4 billion in productivity previously lost to gridlock.
The conference, themed “Enhancing Traffic Efficiency and Safety on Lagos Roads: Challenges, Opportunities, and Innovations,” was declared open by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

The forum brought together key players from various sectors including transportation professionals, urban development experts, academics, security officials, private sector leaders, and international delegates.
Participants are expected to assess Lagos’ current traffic situation and propose workable solutions to its mobility problems.
One of the major announcements during the conference was the unveiling of a new 20-Year Strategic Traffic Management Policy by LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki.
The policy aims to overhaul the state’s traffic system, with focus areas including road upgrades, stronger enforcement, and tech-driven mobility solutions.
