The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Hyacinth Aondona Dajoh, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting victims of the Yelewata crisis.
He gave this assurance during a visit to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camped at the International Market in Makurdi.
“No one will take your land,” Dajoh told the displaced residents on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, while leading members of the Assembly to the camp.
The lawmakers were there to show solidarity and evaluate the welfare conditions of those affected by the recent violence.
Recall that the Yelewata community came under attack on the 13th of June, 2025, following a deadly invasion by suspected armed Fulani herders.
The assault claimed multiple lives, left several wounded, and forced hundreds to flee.
Addressing the IDPs, the Speaker said the House is working closely with Governor Hyacinth Iormem Alia to ensure every displaced person is protected, returned home, and resettled properly.

He denounced the killings and made it clear that the state would not allow the attackers to achieve their aims or make the displacement permanent.
Dajoh praised the swift actions of the Governor, especially the setup of the temporary shelter at the Makurdi International Market.
He also acknowledged the role played by the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) in responding quickly to the humanitarian crisis.
While speaking directly to SEMA’s Executive Secretary, Sir James Iorpuu, the Speaker stressed the importance of fairness in aid delivery, adding, “We must ensure that the assistance meant for the people reaches them directly without compromise.”
During the visit, the lawmakers toured the facilities and engaged with displaced persons, who shared painful stories of their escape and current struggles.
