In a powerful show of unity and sportsmanship, members of Nigeria’s Super Falcons paid a heartfelt visit to South African midfielder Gabriela Salgado at the Mohamed VI Hospital in Casablanca, where she is recovering from surgery after sustaining an injury during the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semifinal clash between Nigeria and South Africa.
The injury, which occurred late in yesterday’s intense semifinal encounter, forced Salgado off the pitch and required immediate medical attention. She underwent successful surgery shortly after.
Despite the high stakes of the match—one of the fiercest rivalries in African women’s football—the Super Falcons took time to offer support, solidarity, and well wishes to the 25-year-old Banyana Banyana star.
Photos and videos circulating on social media under the hashtag #brilaxwafcon24 captured the emotional moments of the visit, showing Nigerian players gathered around Salgado’s hospital bed, sharing smiles, encouragement, and even laughter amid the circumstances.

“This is what football is truly about—beyond the goals and trophies, it’s the human connection, the respect,” one fan posted online. “Massive respect to the Super Falcons.”
The Nigerian Football Federation also praised the team’s gesture, calling it “a reflection of the values the Falcons carry with them—courage, compassion, and character on and off the pitch.”
As WAFCON 2024 continues to draw attention across the continent, moments like this remind the world that the spirit of African football is built not just on fierce competition, but on mutual respect and shared humanity.
