Shettima Heads to Ethiopia for UN Food Systems Summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima has left Abuja on Sunday, July 27, for Addis Ababa, where he will represent Nigeria at the second United Nations Food Systems Summit taking place from July 27 to 29.

The summit, hosted in collaboration with the governments of Ethiopia and Italy, will gather world leaders to assess progress made since the first summit in 2021 and push for stronger commitments toward building sustainable and inclusive food systems.

Shettima will join global leaders in a high-level session focused on transforming the coffee value chain, an industry central to livelihoods across Africa.

He is also scheduled to participate in roundtables, field trips, and networking events aimed at strengthening partnerships and exchanging real-world ideas on food system reform.

Among the key side events is a ministerial roundtable on public finance, trade, and responsible investment, an effort to fast-track the shift to more resilient food systems.

Speaking recently at a briefing by the summit’s Task Force, Shettima outlined Nigeria’s goals: “positioning Nigeria as a leader of thought on African food systems reform, leveraging international partnerships aligned with domestic priorities, and advancing a private sector-led model for continental food transformation.”

The Vice President is expected to return to the country at the end of the summit.
