Tinubu Splashes $100k on Each D’Tigress Player After Historic Win

President Bola Tinubu has conferred national honours on Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic win at the 2025 Women’s Afrobasket Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.

Each player was awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), alongside a cash reward of $100,000. Members of the technical crew received $50,000 each.

The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a reception held at the Presidential Villa on Monday, August 4.

“Mr President has directed me to announce to you that each of the players will receive $100,000, each official will receive $50,000 and each of you will be awarded a flat in the FCT,” Shettima said.

On Sunday, D’Tigress defeated Mali 78–64 in the final at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, making Nigeria the only country to win the Women’s Afrobasket title five consecutive times.

The win also secured the team an automatic spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Among those present at the event were First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Senate Committee Chairman on Youths and Sports Garba Maidoki, and House Committee Chairman on Sports Kabiru Amadou.
