MPAC Slams NYSC Official Over Hijab Clearance Denial in Abuja

The Muslim Public Affairs Centre (MPAC) Nigeria has raised alarm over an incident involving a Muslim female corps member who was allegedly denied clearance in the Federal Capital Territory due to her knee-length hijab.

In a statement released on Thursday, the 7th of August, 2025, MPAC condemned the action as “unlawful and unacceptable,” pointing out that it goes against the constitutional rights that protect freedom of religion and expression in Nigeria.

MPAC explained that the corps member initially faced denial of clearance at her NYSC local office. However, the matter was quickly resolved after the Muslim Corpers’ Association of Nigeria (MCAN) intervened and contacted appropriate NYSC officials.

“We commend the responsible and timely action of MCAN in restoring the rights of the affected corps members.

“Their proactive steps underscore the importance of institutional vigilance in defending the religious liberties of Muslim citizens,” MPAC Executive Chairman, Disu Kamor, said.

Kamor, while acknowledging that the issue had been addressed, pointed out that similar cases are still happening.

He stated that Muslim female corps members continue to endure “subtle and overt discrimination” for wearing the hijab, which he described as “an essential and non-negotiable aspect of their religious identity.”

Kamor urged the NYSC Director-General to formally instruct all state coordinators, zonal officers, and local inspectors to respect the rights of corps members, particularly those wearing religious attire like the hijab.

“The NYSC, as a federal agency, must model religious tolerance and uphold constitutional provisions,” Kamor said.

“No official has the authority to impose unofficial dress codes or act on personal bias.”

He added that the hijab must not be viewed as defiance, but rather as a valid expression of personal faith.

“Denying Muslim females their right to wear it is an affront to Nigeria’s democracy and the founding values of the NYSC unity in diversity, service with dignity, and respect for all,” he added.

MPAC concluded by reaffirming its commitment to tracking similar incidents and said it was ready to take legal or institutional action when necessary to protect the rights of Muslim citizens.
