The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has urged air travellers using the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, to set out well ahead of their departure times as ongoing renovation works continue to disrupt smooth operations at the country’s busiest airport.
The advisory, issued on Friday, August 29, 2025, follows mounting complaints from passengers about heavy traffic on the airport access roads, delays at security checkpoints, and limited terminal space due to sections of the building being cordoned off for construction.
FAAN explained that the project is part of a large-scale overhaul designed to modernise the four-decade-old facility and bring it closer to international standards.
The renovation includes upgrades to the departure and arrival halls, baggage handling systems, and passenger screening areas.
MMIA, commissioned in 1979, has long faced criticism over congestion, inadequate facilities, and ageing infrastructure.
Despite several patchwork repairs in recent years, passenger growth has consistently outpaced capacity.

As Nigeria’s primary gateway, the Lagos airport handles more than 7 million passengers annually, representing over half of the country’s international traffic.
FAAN appealed for patience during the upgrade period, stressing that while the inconvenience is temporary, the improvements will lead to faster check-in processes, better passenger flow, and enhanced safety when completed.
Airlines operating from MMIA have also begun advising customers to allow for additional travel time.
The works are being executed in phases, with FAAN promising regular updates until the project is completed.
