Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian youths to resist the temptation of selling their votes, warning that doing so amounts to selling their future.
Obi made the appeal on Sunday during the National Youth Rally marking the 40th anniversary of the Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON), hosted by the Onitsha Ecclesiastical Province at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Awka.
Addressing thousands of young people at the rally, Obi reminded them that the responsibility of nation-building rests heavily on their shoulders.
He emphasized the need for citizens to elect leaders with competence, capacity, compassion, and character, stressing that Nigeria’s greatest tragedy is not who becomes president but when leaders lack the courage and integrity to serve the people.
“Ours is a richly blessed nation, yet we remain trapped in hunger, insecurity, and poor governance,” Obi said.

“Your voter’s card is your most powerful weapon against bad leadership. Do not sell your vote—for once you do, you have also sold your healthcare, your education, and your future.”
He further noted that while God has blessed Nigeria with resources, it is the duty of its citizens to choose credible leaders. Obi commended the Catholic youth movement for its resilience and commitment, applauding Nigerian youths for moving beyond complaints to demand real change.
Concluding his remarks, Obi reiterated his vision for a new Nigeria built on honesty, determination, and collective action, declaring that “a New Nigeria is POssible.”
