A Gombe-based lawyer, Barrister Idris Halilu, has filed a suit against the Gombe State Government and the Nigeria Police Force over the alleged unlawful ban on commercial motorcycles (popularly known as okada) within the state capital.
In the suit lodged before the Gombe State High Court, Halilu described the restriction as unconstitutional, arguing that it violates the fundamental rights of citizens to freedom of movement and means of livelihood.
He is demanding N50 million in damages for what he termed “hardship and economic losses” caused by the enforcement of the ban.
The Gombe State Government had in July 2025 announced a ban on motorcycles within the metropolis, citing rising security threats, including their reported use by criminals in armed robbery and phone-snatching incidents.

Halilu, however, insists that the government failed to follow due process or provide alternatives for the thousands of residents who rely on motorcycles for transportation and income.
The case has been fixed for hearing in September 2025, with the State Government and Police expected to enter their defense.
The ban has continued to stir controversy across Gombe, with transport unions and youth groups divided over its necessity.
