Bago Dissolves Cabinet in Niger, Calls Move Mid-term Review

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has explained that the recent dissolution of his cabinet is part of a mid-term evaluation of his administration’s achievements.

Speaking with journalists on Monday, the 1st of September, 2025, in Minna, Mr Bago described the shake-up as a necessary step to reposition governance in the state.

A statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Bologi, confirmed that the cabinet dissolution was announced during Monday’s State Executive Council meeting.

Despite the changes, the governor kept some key officials in place. The secretary to the state government, chief of staff, deputy chief of staff, and other top aides in his office all retained their positions.

According to the governor, the decision allows room for adjustments that would inject renewed energy into governance. He added that while some commissioners could return, others might be reassigned to different offices.

“This is a mid-term review of our performance, and as you know very well, these people were appointed by me. I have decided, in the interest of every other person, to rejig the cabinet.

Some may be reappointed, while others may be assigned to other portfolios to give fresh energy to the system.

They have done their Key Performance Index: some exceeded it, while we find out that others can be valuable in other fields,” he said.

Mr Bago also acknowledged the efforts of the outgoing cabinet members, stressing that their work laid the groundwork for his administration’s progress so far.

“All of them are part of the foundation we had; we are grateful for their contributions.
What we have done is a collective responsibility,” he added.

The dissolved cabinet was originally sworn in during 2023.
