Strike: SSANU, NASU Hand Govt 7-Day Ultimatum

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved disputes concerning non-academic staff welfare in universities.

In a joint letter dated the 12th of September, 2025, the two unions accused the government of “unjust” allocation of earned allowances, withholding of arrears, and neglect of other pressing matters.

The correspondence, signed by SSANU President Muhammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, referenced an earlier communication from the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of both unions to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, on the 18t of June, 2025.

That communication, according to the unions, led to a meeting with the Minister on the 4th of July, 2025, but the issues remain unresolved.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the issues raised in the letter centred on: Unjust Disbursement of N50Billion Earned Allowances; Non-Payment of Outstanding Withheld Salaries and 25/35% Salary Increments; and Renegotiation of Year 2009 FGN and NASU/SSANU Agreements,” the statement read.

SSANU and NASU said the government has until Monday, the 15th of September, 2025, to act on their concerns. Failure to do so, they warned, would trigger a chain of lawful industrial actions, including strikes, to push for their demands.
