Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has criticised what he described as the unfairly low number of Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state compared to others across Nigeria.
Speaking in Yenagoa on Monday, September 22, the governor said the imbalance remained a clear injustice despite Bayelsa’s contribution to the nation’s oil and gas wealth.
“I am very pleased to commend the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu for his interest in local government administration,” Diri said.

He noted that his administration has consistently championed true federalism since its inception.
“We cannot persist with a scenario where a Bayelsa that produces oil and gas for Nigeria has only 8 LGAs, while others would have 40 and 44 LGAs.
“It is injustice. We need a national dialogue where we can examine most of these things and local governments’ creation to be the function of state governments with the ability to fund the local governments they can create,” he added.
