Reps Vows Speedy Passage of Constitution Amendment Bill

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has assured Nigerians that the constitutional amendment bill will be passed without delay.

Abbas gave the assurance on Monday, September 22, at the National Public Hearing on the review of the 1999 Constitution in Abuja.

He said the House would ensure the success of the amendment process after repeated failed attempts by previous assemblies.

The Speaker also praised Nigerians for participating in the hearing to make their voices heard, stressing that the reforms would impact every sector of society.

“As Speaker, I pledge that we will take your contributions seriously and consider the bills with diligence, fairness, and urgency,” Abbas stated.

“We will engage the State Assemblies respectfully and transparently to secure their concurrence.

“We would continue to work with the executive and with you, the people, to ensure that the amendment process proceeds smoothly.”

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Amendment, also pledged to make the process inclusive.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, who represented President Bola Tinubu at the event, commended the committee for creating an inclusive platform that allowed citizens, civil society, political parties, professional groups, and traditional rulers to contribute to the amendment exercise.

Akume added that the administration remained committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
