Peter Obi Highlights Leadership Lessons During Three-Day Working Visit to USA

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has reflected on leadership values during his ongoing three-day trip to the United States.

Obi departed Lagos on Tuesday, September 24, aboard Delta Airlines for a tour covering Washington, Chicago, and a stopover in Atlanta. Delta, founded over a century ago, is the oldest operating airline in the United States.

Arriving at Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport—renowned as the world’s busiest with over 100 million passengers annually—Obi noted its scale compared to Nigerian aviation.

The airport, owned by the City of Atlanta, contributes an estimated $32 billion to the city’s economy and $70 billion to the wider Georgia metropolitan area, amounts surpassing Nigeria’s annual federal budgets.

Atlanta itself operates on a $3 billion budget under the leadership of Mayor Andre Dickens, a former businessman committed to public safety, youth empowerment, and fair wages. Dickens, with a reported net worth of $10 million, met Obi during the visit.

Recounting their interaction, Obi observed the mayor’s modest conduct during their shared flight to Washington. He highlighted that Dickens neither received preferential treatment at the airport nor travelled with elaborate entourages, in sharp contrast to practices by some Nigerian leaders who, despite smaller budgets, often move with sirens, aides, and excessive protocol.

“Our public conduct and behaviour must change. A New Nigeria is possible,” Obi declared in his reflection.

His remarks are expected to reignite discussions around governance, humility in leadership, and the culture of public office in Nigeria.
