Nigeria’s Flying Eagles began their 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup campaign on a winning note after edging Saudi Arabia 3-2 in a gripping Group opener on Friday night.
It took just 11 minutes for the Nigerians to stamp their authority when Nasiru Salihu powered in a header from Sani Suleiman’s cross. But Saudi Arabia struck back in the 21st minute through Amar Al Yuhaybi, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to draw level.
The Flying Eagles regained control before halftime as Amos Ochoche converted a well-executed set piece in the 38th minute to make it 2-1.
The Falcons, however, were not done. Barely five minutes after the restart, Talal Haji punished a slack Nigerian defense to restore parity again at 2-2.

With both sides missing clear-cut chances, the game looked set to end in a stalemate until stoppage time drama. In the 94th minute, Nigeria were awarded a penalty, and captain Daniel Bameyi held his nerve to slot home the decisive goal.
The result hands Nigeria their first three points of the tournament, putting them in strong contention as they prepare for their next group game.
