The Congress of University Academics (CONUA) has denied reports linking it to any ongoing strike within Nigerian universities, saying it remains focused on ensuring stability across campuses.
In a statement released on Sunday, October 12, and signed by its National President, Dr Niyi Sunmonu, the union dismissed social media claims suggesting it had joined the industrial action.
“CONUA wishes to categorically clarify that it has not declared any strike action and is not part of any ongoing strike,” Sunmonu said.
He reaffirmed the union’s dedication to maintaining academic peace, fostering excellence, and resolving issues through dialogue with the government and relevant authorities.
Sunmonu explained that CONUA had earlier protested its exclusion from the renegotiation committee of the 2009 Agreement inaugurated in October 2024, which led to a meeting with the Minister of Education on September 11, 2025.

According to him, the minister had promised to expand the Yayale Ahmed Renegotiation Committee to include all academic unions, a commitment that has since been fulfilled.
He added that none of the issues raised by CONUA had escalated into disputes, noting that after a series of congresses held across the country between September 18 and 24, members resolved to avoid any strike action.
Sunmonu urged members to remain diligent in their academic and administrative responsibilities, and called on Vice Chancellors to safeguard CONUA members in their workplaces.
He further appealed to students to stay focused on their studies, assuring them of the union’s continued commitment to quality education, national progress, and industrial harmony.
