The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the release of the first batch of hostages by Hamas following the implementation of a new ceasefire agreement between both sides.
According to officials, the release was coordinated through the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and represents the first stage of a multi-phase prisoner exchange. Seven hostages were freed in this initial round, including Matan Engerst, Guy Gilboa Dalal, Alon Ohel, Gali and Zivi Berman, Eitan Mor, and Omari Moran.
The handover took place near the Re’im reception point along the Israel–Gaza border, where the freed individuals were received by medical teams after brief reunions with their families. The Red Cross supervised the transfer in accordance with the ceasefire terms.
Under the broader agreement, up to 20 surviving hostages are expected to be released in stages, alongside the repatriation of the remains of deceased captives. In exchange, Israel will release over 1,700 Palestinian prisoners, including several held in Gaza and the West Bank.

In Tel Aviv, hundreds gathered at Hostages Square to celebrate the news, waving flags and holding pictures of those still in captivity. The deal was brokered with the assistance of regional and international mediators, who continue to monitor compliance by both parties.
While the development has sparked cautious optimism, analysts warn that sustaining the truce and completing all phases of the exchange will depend on mutual trust and verification efforts.
The ceasefire agreement is being viewed as one of the most meaningful diplomatic milestones in the protracted conflict, though officials on both sides stress that lasting peace will require sustained dialogue and strict adherence to the accord.
