R&B Star D’Angelo Dies at 51 After Battle With Cancer

American R&B singer Michael Eugene Archer, popularly known as D’Angelo, has died after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 51.

His family announced his death in a statement released on Tuesday, confirming that the neo-soul pioneer passed away on October 14, 2025.

“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life. After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home,” the statement read.

The family expressed appreciation for his contributions to music and requested privacy during their period of mourning.

Born in 1974, D’Angelo rose to fame in the mid-1990s following the release of his debut album “Brown Sugar”, which produced hit singles such as Lady, Cruisin’, and Brown Sugar.

He followed up with his critically acclaimed 2000 album “Voodoo,” solidifying his status as one of the leading figures in the neo-soul movement.

D’Angelo began his professional career in 1993 after signing with EMI Records. He wrote the hit song U Will Know for the group Black Men United (B.M.U.) before launching his solo career.

Tributes have begun to pour in from the music industry. Producer DJ Premier, who worked with D’Angelo on the 1999 single Devil’s Pie, wrote on social media: “Such a sad loss to the passing of D’Angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep peacefully D’. Love you KING.”

Details of his funeral arrangements have not yet been released.
