Nkere Says BRGIE Pushed ‘Christian Genocide’ Narrative to U.S. Congress

The Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE) has admitted it played a major role in shaping the “Christian genocide in Nigeria” narrative currently being debated in the U.S. Congress.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, Acting Prime Minister Ogechukwu Nkere disclosed that he and other BRGIE officials had, for over a year, engaged U.S. lawmakers—including Senator Ted Cruz—to push the case of alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria and Biafra.

Nkere claimed those efforts culminated in Senator Cruz’s introduction of the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025, which seeks sanctions on Nigerian officials over religious rights violations.

Nkere described the development as a diplomatic breakthrough for Biafrans and Nigerian Christians, praising Cruz for his “historic leadership.”

However, the Nigerian government, through presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, dismissed the genocide claims as baseless and politically driven.

The National Assembly also condemned the narrative, calling it a deliberate attempt to malign the country.
