PDP Members Storm US Embassy, Seek Help to ‘Save Nigeria’s Democracy’

Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Thursday, November 6, held a peaceful protest at the United States Embassy in Abuja, urging the international community to intervene in what they described as a growing threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

The demonstrators, under the banner of the PDP Like-Mind Group, marched with placards bearing messages such as “Fix PDP, fix Nigeria, save our democracy,” “Stop party opposition intimidation,” and “Please save our democracy from intimidation.”

Protesters said the demonstration was part of efforts to “draw global attention” to alleged harassment of opposition figures by the ruling party, warning that such actions could erode the country’s multi-party system.

The group also delivered protest letters to the European Union complex, the Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The protest followed escalating tensions within the PDP, which has been embroiled in a leadership tussle.

On Sunday, a faction led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu and others, prompting a counter-suspension by Anyanwu’s loyalists.

Both camps have continued to assert their legitimacy, deepening the internal crisis that has plagued the party in recent months.

Organisers said the protest, themed “Save Our Democracy from Intimidation,” was aimed at rallying both domestic and international support to protect opposition parties and preserve Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
