Former President Olusegun Obasanjo sparked laughter on Friday, November 7, when he playfully told Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, that he would reach heaven before him.
The comment came during the 60th birthday celebration of celebrated journalist and broadcaster, Dr Reuben Abati, in Lagos. Obasanjo, known for his humour, turned a solemn moment into a lighthearted exchange.
“I will get to the kingdom of heaven before you,” he said, smiling at Bishop Kukah.
“Not because I will die before you since you are younger, but because of the grace of God,” he added, eliciting laughter from the guests.
Beyond the jest, Obasanjo paid glowing tribute to Abati, calling him a man of many talents — a journalist, television host, commentator, community leader, politician, and now an accomplished author.

“Reuben, you and your colleagues have done remarkably well,” Obasanjo said.
“You have achieved much and continue to inspire many through your intellect and dedication. You have made progress, but now it is time to achieve success,” he added.
Having known Abati for over three decades, Obasanjo commended him for embodying values of truth, discipline, and purpose, which he described as essential for meaningful achievement.
“I am proud that, in my lifetime, I can say I have a son in Reuben who understands, who has been recognised, and who is firmly on the path to success,” he added.
The event, attended by media personalities, politicians, and dignitaries, also featured messages of goodwill praising Abati’s contributions to journalism, public discourse, and national development.
