Former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr. Sam Amadi, has stated that President Bola Tinubu has not made any clear commitment to ensuring a free and fair general election, raising concerns about the administration’s democratic direction.
Dr. Amadi stated this while speaking at the First Daily 5th anniversary lecture in Abuja on Monday, November 10.
He also assessed Nigeria’s governance, electoral integrity, and rule of law under the current administration.
He argued that while the president has repeatedly emphasised economic reforms and national security, he has remained silent on concrete steps to guarantee credible elections in 2027.

“So far, there is no clear commitment from President Tinubu to a free and fair election in 2027.
“We have seen no actionable policy, no reform agenda, and no institutional assurance to strengthen the independence of the electoral process,” Amadi said.
He further criticised what he described as the government’s “increasing tolerance for political impunity” and “erosion of democratic checks and balances,” warning that the absence of electoral assurances could undermine citizens’ confidence in the next polls.
Amadi urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations, and opposition parties to begin early advocacy for reforms that would enhance transparency and restore public trust in Nigeria’s democracy.
His remarks come amid growing debates about Nigeria’s political future and the readiness of the Tinubu administration to conduct credible elections in 2027, following controversies surrounding the 2023 general elections.
