Incumbent Govts Cannot Deliver True Electoral Reforms — Amaechi

Former Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has stated that no incumbent government in Nigeria is capable of delivering genuine electoral reform, arguing that those in power often lack the political will to change a system that benefits them.

Amaechi made the assertion today, Monday, November 10, while speaking at the As First Daily 5th Anniversary Lecture held at the Shehu Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

The event, themed “How Can We Make Our Vote Count?”, brought together politicians, media professionals, and civic leaders to examine Nigeria’s democratic and electoral challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“There is no incumbent government that can achieve electoral reform in Nigeria,” Amaechi declared, stressing that true reform must come from independent institutions and collective citizen action rather than from those currently holding political power.

He noted that while many leaders speak about improving elections, the realities of political interest and power retention often hinder genuine reform.

According to him, until Nigerians insist on transparency, accountability, and fairness, the electoral process will continue to reflect the interests of the ruling elite rather than the will of the people.

Amaechi also emphasized the role of civic awareness and media advocacy in ensuring credible elections, urging journalists to remain fearless in holding leaders accountable.
