Yuletide Boost: Lagos Poultry Farmers Slash Egg, Chicken Prices as Subsidy Kicks In

The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Lagos State Chapter, has announced plans to reduce poultry prices following the rollout of the Lagos State Government’s “Ounje Eko” Phase II farmers’ subsidy programme.

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday, PAN Vice President and Chairman of the Aiyedoto Poultry Farmers Settlement, Mr. Foluso Adams, said the subsidy would significantly cut production costs for local farmers, paving the way for lower poultry prices ahead of the yuletide.

According to Adams, the price of a crate of eggs—currently between N5,500 and N6,000—is expected to drop to about N5,100–N5,300 once the subsidy takes effect. “Thanks to the subsidy, poultry farmers have agreed to reduce prices,” he said.

The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems recently launched Phase II of the Ounje Eko programme, aimed at reducing food prices for residents during the festive season.

Adams, however, noted that the subsidy applies only to the Animal Care brand of feed, meaning not all farmers will benefit. He added that members have been encouraged to take advantage of the scheme and reflect the cost reduction in their prices.

He disclosed that materials for the subsidy are expected on Wednesday, with 50 farmers from the settlement listed to benefit. The initiative has also triggered price adjustments among competing feed producers seeking to retain customers.

Adams further predicted a reduction in chicken prices during the festive period, though discussions on the scale of the cut are ongoing.

He added that if other states adopt Lagos State’s approach, poultry prices nationwide could drop significantly during the yuletide season.
