Rivers Assembly Passes Vote of Confidence on Tinubu, Endorse Re-election

The Rivers State House of Assembly has formally called on President Bola Tinubu to run for a second term in 2027 after adopting a motion expressing confidence in his leadership.

Lawmakers reached the decision during plenary on Wednesday, December 3, after House Leader Major Jack, who represents Akuku Toru I, presented a motion commending Tinubu for what he described as efforts to steer the nation in the right direction.

Jack told lawmakers that the motion sought to appreciate the president’s leadership and his contributions to the development of Rivers State. He noted that at least fifteen members sponsored the proposal.

All legislators who spoke backed the call for Tinubu’s re-election. Dumle Maol, representing Gokana constituency, said his support reflected the wishes of his constituents, adding that several people from the area had been appointed to federal positions.

“My people have asked me to support this motion. The house should call on the president to contest again because you cannot change a winning team,” he said.

Deputy House Leader Linda Somiari Stewart aligned with the motion, insisting that Tinubu had demonstrated strong performance in office.

“This motion is timely. The vote of confidence is not a mere ceremonial expression. It is a declaration that is solemn and weighty, and made when the nation demands stability, freedom, and leadership,” she said.

Speaker Martins Amaewhule also expressed support, emphasising that the Rivers assembly would continue to back the federal government.

“The president is doing the needful in terms of security. It is not enough to talk down on the federal government,” he said.

Amaewhule added that citizens should assist security agencies. “All hands need to be on deck. We need to help our security agencies. Everybody needs to give out information on the whereabouts of criminals,” he said.

He urged prayers for the president’s health and wisdom. “For us, our job is to pray for Mr President for good health, strength, and wisdom to pilot the affairs of this country,” he said.

The motion was then adopted through a voice vote.
