Ibadan Crackdown: Oyo Taskforce Nabs Drug Suspects, Tears Down Criminal Hideouts

The Joint Security Taskforce in Oyo State has arrested two suspected drug peddlers and demolished criminal hideouts and illegal structures at Orita-Challenge in Oluyole Local Government Area, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

The operation was conducted in response to petitions from residents reporting nefarious activities, including robbery, assault, and drug trafficking, in the community. The raid involved a coordinated effort between the Oluyole Local Government Environmental Team, security operatives, and multiple agencies including Amotekun, the Nigeria Police Force, Operation Burst, and the Civil Defence.

Council Chairman Akeem Olatunji, who spoke to journalists in Ibadan, said the operation targeted illegal structures and shanties that had served as hideouts for criminal elements.

“We received numerous petitions from residents about individuals and faceless persons involved in criminal activities, including robbery, maiming, rape, and drug dealing. As a responsive and responsible government, we had no choice but to intervene to restore public confidence and peace,” Olatunji said.

He explained that the occupants had been given a 30-day notice to vacate the premises but failed to comply. “Although only two persons were arrested with substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, others have been ordered to leave the area immediately and warned against engaging in activities that disturb public peace,” he added.

Olatunji noted that the arrested suspects are currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing to ensure prosecution and serve as a deterrent to others.

Community leaders, including Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in the area, Olayinka Banjo, commended Olatunji and the taskforce for their commitment to security and development in Oluyole Local Government.
