The Edo State Government has pledged to fully enforce its new Sanitation and Pollution Management Law to protect public health and the environment.
The commitment was made on Sunday by the state Commissioner for Environment and Sustainability, Nosa Adams, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Benin, the state capital. Adams said the law would strengthen efforts to keep communities clean and tackle pollution and environmental degradation across the state.
Adams stressed the importance of remediation, regeneration, and restoration programmes to reverse years of environmental damage. He also called on residents to adopt proper waste management practices, emphasizing that environmental cleanliness begins with individual responsibility at the home and neighbourhood level.
The commissioner outlined the roles of six agencies under the ministry, including the Forestry Commission and Waste Management Board, noting that effective coordination among them is central to sanitation and pollution control.

He added that the ministry is engaging the media and stakeholders to promote public awareness and harmonize agency roles to avoid duplication of efforts.
Stakeholders at the meeting welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the need for continuous enforcement, citizen participation, and sustained public education campaigns.
Adams reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, saying collective participation would determine the law’s success. The implementation of the Sanitation and Pollution Management Law is expected to improve environmental quality, support sustainable development, and create cleaner, safer spaces across Edo State.
