State Police Will End Insecurity in Six Months, Says Gani Adams

Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, has said Nigeria could dramatically improve its security situation within six months if the federal government approves the establishment of state police.

He made the comment on Monday, December 8, while speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’.

“For the first time, the six geopolitical zones in the country agree to state police. Even our northern brothers, the northern governors and the emirs also agree on state police,” he said.

“And I believe that if the national assembly legislates on state police and the president signs it into law, the issue of insecurity in this country will be resolved within a period of six months.”

Adams said the south-west’s Amotekun corps has been doing its best but lacks the type of weapons needed to face heavily armed groups operating across the country.

He addressed concerns that state police might be manipulated for political purposes, insisting that the focus should remain on saving lives.

He also aligned himself with southern governors who view state policing as central to true federalism and grassroots security.

“I completely agree with the southern governors that we urgently need state police. State police is a key element of true federalism,” he said.

“At the same time, I commend the south-west governors, who had already taken a position on this matter even before the southern governors.

“Given the current situation in the country, anyone who cares about Nigeria cannot disagree on the need for state police,” he said.

Adams reiterated that embracing state policing is the only realistic path to restoring law and order nationwide.
