Delta Governor Warns Employers: Accept Corps Members or Face Consequences

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has called on employers across the state to accept and provide a conducive working environment for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to them.

The governor made the appeal on Tuesday at the closing ceremony of the NYSC Batch C, Stream I, held at the orientation camp in Issele-Uku. He was represented by the Commissioner for Special Projects, Mr Funyei Manager.

Oborevwori emphasized that corp members should also willingly accept their postings, including assignments in rural communities, noting that such areas often need their services the most. “In the same vein, corps members are expected to willingly accept their postings, bearing in mind that the values of national service cannot be entrenched if postings, especially to rural communities, are consistently rejected,” he said.

He urged corps members to embrace national service with seriousness, commitment, and patriotism, stressing that their contributions would enrich personal experiences and benefit the nation. He also commended the skill acquisition and entrepreneurship training under the NYSC’s Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which equips corps members with skills for financial independence.

The governor further encouraged corps members to integrate into host communities, interact positively with residents, and serve as ambassadors of the scheme and representatives of their families and states of origin.

Oborevwori praised the NYSC management for sustaining programs that address youth unemployment and promote self-sufficiency, and he commended the Niger Delta Development Commission for installing 229 solar-powered streetlights at the camp, enhancing security and aesthetics.

NYSC State Coordinator, John Kwange, also thanked the governor for his continuous support and interventions, praying for continued progress, peace, and prosperity in Delta State.

The governor concluded by urging corps members to be law-abiding, respectful, and exemplary, uphold NYSC by-laws, respect host communities’ customs, and ensure that their Community Development Service (CDS) initiatives leave a lasting impact.
