EFCC Detains Malami Over Alleged Terrorism Financing, Money‑Laundering

Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, has been taken into the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of terrorism financing, money laundering, and suspicious asset acquisitions.

The former minister remains in custody because he has not met bail conditions, according to a senior EFCC official.

The investigation involves as many as 18 separate offences, including a N10 billion investment in Kebbi State, the management of recovered funds, reportedly $322 million from Switzerland and $22 million from Jersey and 46 bank accounts linked to Malami.

Malami has denied the allegations, describing them as “unjust” and based on “conjecture, speculation, or guilt by association.”

He said he has never been formally accused, interrogated, or charged in relation to terrorism financing.

The EFCC has not provided further details, citing the ongoing nature of the probe.

Sources said investigators need more time to examine the complex web of transactions, documents, and assets connected to the former minister.
