Reps Urge FG to Make January 15 Public Holiday for Fallen Soldiers

The House of Representatives is asking the Federal Government to make January 15 a national public holiday to honour Nigerian soldiers who gave their lives protecting the country.

The call came on December 10, 2025, after lawmakers highlighted the daily risks soldiers face in fighting insurgency, keeping peace, and defending communities.

January 15 is already Armed Forces Remembrance Day, marking the end of the Nigerian Civil War in 1970.

Lawmakers say making it a public holiday would give Nigerians a real chance to reflect, participate in ceremonies, and show respect for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

While the House has urged the government to act, no date has been set for implementation.

Every year, the day is marked with wreath-laying ceremonies and military parades led by the president and service chiefs.
