The ancient city of Oyo on Sunday witnessed a convergence of political heavyweights and traditional rulers as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, commenced the installation of new high-ranking chiefs.
Among those in attendance was Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, who arrived at the Alaafin’s palace alongside his wife, Layal. Tinubu is billed to be installed as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland, a title interpreted as “the beloved child” or “one dear to the hearts of the Yoruba people.”
The title is traditionally associated with the promotion of Yoruba values, unity and cultural heritage, and is regarded as one of the prestigious honorary chieftaincy titles within the Oyo traditional institution.
Also present in Oyo was the Senator representing Zamfara West and former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’Aziz Yari, who arrived with a delegation of northern senators and other political figures. Yari is to be installed as the Obaloyin of Yorubaland at the same ceremony.
In a statement earlier issued by the Director of Media and Publicity to the Alaafin, Bode Durojaiye, the Obaloyin of Yorubaland title was described as symbolising love, compassion, justice and a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms.

Durojaiye noted that holders of the titles are expected to shoulder responsibilities that include promoting Yoruba culture, advising the Alaafin, fostering unity across regions, and supporting education and social welfare initiatives.
Videos circulating on social media showed that preparations at the venue had been concluded, with several prominent figures already in attendance. Among those sighted were former Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, lawmakers from different parts of the country, as well as a wide array of traditional rulers and chiefs.
The installation ceremony is expected to further underscore the historical significance of the Oyo traditional institution and its enduring role in Nigeria’s cultural and socio-political landscape.
