Northern CAN Demands End to National “Bleeding” Applauds Clemency for Farmer

The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has issued a stirring call for structural and moral reform, framing the Christmas season as a vital crossroads for the country’s future.

In a communique released on Tuesday, the 23rd of December, 2025, the religious body asserted that the Nigerian leadership must transition from mere words to decisive action to secure the state.

Led by Chairman Rev. Joseph John Hayab and Secretary General Bishop Mohammed Naga, the association stressed that the current state of insecurity is unsustainable.

They argued that until the “sponsors and financiers” of violence are brought to light, true stability will remain out of reach.

The leadership observed that the essence of the season transcends festivities, noting that it provides Nigerians “an opportunity for sober reflection on the moral conscience of the nation and the social direction of our country.”

According to the statement: “Christmas calls the nation to peace, justice, compassion and respect for the sanctity of human life. It reminds us that a just and secure society is built on moral courage, compassion and collective responsibility.”

While the association expressed deep concern over the economic struggles of the populace, they highlighted the “enduring values of love” shown by those who provided aid to the less fortunate. They also extended gratitude to the Nigerian Armed Forces for their ongoing sacrifices, though they cautioned that the mission to restore safety is far from over.

The association lamented the psychological and physical toll of the current crisis, stating: “The continued existence of terrorism, banditry and kidnapping has caused immense pain to individuals, families and communities, leaving scars that many may never fully recover from.”

Despite these challenges, Northern CAN expressed optimism regarding the Federal Government’s decision to officially label kidnappers and bandits as terrorists. They believe this shift “strengthens the national security framework and demonstrates a firm commitment to confronting insecurity with the seriousness it demands.”

A significant portion of the message focused on the recent actions of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri. The Governor was praised for granting clemency to Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer previously on death row following a clash on his property.

The association viewed the initial sentencing as a failure of the legal system, asserting that: “The grant of clemency brings relief and affirms the principle that self-defence in the face of mortal danger should not be criminalised while terrorists and their advocates walk freely in our society.”

The document concluded with a plea for equity and adherence to the rule of law across all tiers of government. Northern CAN urged the citizenry to remain peaceful and united in the face of adversity.

The association’s final charge to the public was one of hope and collective effort: “As the nation celebrates Christmas, let us support our leaders, pray for the healing of our land and work collectively for a safer, more just and more united Nigeria.”
