Former Presidential Aide Declares PDP “Beyond Fixing” Ahead of 2027

Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the erstwhile Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Bola Tinubu, has delivered a grim assessment of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that the former ruling party has reached a point of no return.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television this Thursday, the 25th of December, 2025, Baba-Ahmed shared his perspective on the shifting dynamics of Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 general elections approach.

Baba-Ahmed argued that the PDP’s relevance as a central opposition force is evaporating. He suggested that the party’s historical dominance has left its leaders ill-equipped for the realities of being out of power.

“The PDP is drifting away. I think it is gone, and I do not believe anyone can fix it. The PDP is not the only party capable of providing a credible opposition to the APC; there is the ADC and others. I think that sometimes we blame the government too much and we don’t pay attention to the damage that the PDP, the opposition, has done to itself. The truth about it is that PDP has been on the free fall for a long time.”

The former aide highlighted a fundamental disconnect in the PDP’s strategy, noting that the transition from a long-term ruling party to an opposition role has been mishandled.

He observed that seasoned politicians who once managed the nation’s affairs appeared to have “lost their heads” after losing their grip on power.

Baba-Ahmed emphasized that the party’s current state is largely a result of self-inflicted wounds rather than external pressure alone.

Regarding the party’s internal erosion, he remarked: “But what has the PDP done to itself? PDP has been involved in destroying itself consistently. And what is amazing is that they started very well as a party, accomplished politicians, people who had served their country very well. And certainly it has degenerated and this is where we are.”

While largely critical of the opposition, Baba-Ahmed did not spare President Tinubu. He notes that the President is “amassing too much power” and surrounding himself with an excessive number of politicians, though he clarified that gathering politicians is “not necessarily power.”

Baba-Ahmed pointed out that the PDP is repeating its past mistake of fragmenting and inadvertently strengthening its rivals.

“They allowed their party to split. They couldn’t find a way to either take the part that is left. It’s not the first time PDP has taken a huge chunk of itself and given it to the opposition. This happened in 2015 and it’s happening again,” he said.
