The recent surge in terrorist activity within Nigeria is being linked to shifting military alliances in West Africa.
Shehu Sani, the former Senator for Kaduna Central, recently identified a direct correlation between international security pacts in the Sahel and the rising instability across Nigerian borders.
According to Sani, the presence of Russian military interests in neighboring nations has created a “push factor,” driving armed groups into Nigerian territory.
Writing on his verified X account this Sunday, the 28th of December, 2025, the former lawmaker explained: “Since the security agreement and operation between Russia and the Sahelian states of Burkina, Mali and Niger Republic commenced, more terrorists from those countries forcefully relocated their bases to Nigeria.”

This migration of terror comes at a time when Nigeria is already grappling with a significant spike in violent incidents. Over the past few months, the nation has faced: Mass abductions targeting vulnerable populations. The kidnapping of women and schoolchildren from local communities. A rising death toll resulting from these violent encounters.
Sani emphasized that Nigeria must not become a sanctuary for these displaced militant groups. Highlighting the urgency of the situation, he advocated for an aggressive defense strategy: “They should be denied any breathing space in our country by all means necessary.”
