Political economist and former presidential candidate, Prof. Pat Utomi, has warned that he would withdraw his political support for Peter Obi if the former Anambra State governor accepts a vice-presidential slot ahead of the 2027 general election.
Utomi made the declaration during a Thursday interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, insisting that Obi should contest the presidency rather than accept a subordinate role in any political arrangement.
“Peter Obi will contest for the presidency. The day he becomes somebody’s vice president, I will walk away from his corner,” Utomi said.
He argued that Obi’s political standing, nationwide support base, and previous presidential bid make him unsuitable for a vice-presidential role, stressing that Nigeria needs decisive leadership at the highest level.

Utomi also criticised what he described as the repeated recycling of political leadership in the country, warning against turning the presidency into a “retirement home” for ageing politicians.
He renewed his call for age limits for executive offices as part of broader political reforms.
The comments come amid growing speculation over opposition alliances and political permutations ahead of the 2027 elections, with Obi’s future political direction continuing to generate national debate following recent opposition realignments.
