The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are set to formally seal a fresh agreement on Wednesday, the 14th of January, 2026, aimed at strengthening the university education system and promoting long-term stability in the sector.
This was disclosed in a statement released on Sunday by the Ministry of Education.
According to the statement, the agreement signing ceremony will take place at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Conference Hall, Maitama, Abuja, and will be overseen by the Minister of Education, Maruf Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad.
The move follows ASUU’s recent 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government over unresolved issues. However, the planned strike was averted after both parties engaged in overnight negotiations that led to a breakthrough.
The ministry explained that the new agreement demonstrates the government’s resolve to maintain open and constructive engagement with key stakeholders, while prioritising dialogue, cooperation, and mutual understanding in addressing labour disputes.
It noted that the formalisation of the pact is the outcome of several years of between the Federal Government and ASUU, focused on resolving lingering industrial disagreements in the university system.

The agreement, the ministry added, is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which positions education as a critical tool for national development, human capital advancement, and socio-economic progress.
The statement said: “This is expected to further enhance industrial peace, create a more conducive academic environment, and reinforce confidence among students, university staff, and the wider public.
“The agreement unveiling will bring together senior government officials, ASUU representatives, heads of tertiary institutions, development partners, and members of the media.”
