The Director of News at Television Continental (TVC), Babajide Otitoju, has warned that the survival of any state governor largely depends on the backing of the state legislature, stressing that a governor who loses the confidence of lawmakers may not remain in office for long.
Otitoju shared this view on Sunday, the 18th of January, 2026, during a live interview on TVC, where he analysed the ongoing political tension in Rivers State.
His comments came amid the impeachment moves initiated by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
According to him, the process targeting the deputy governor appears questionable, as the lawmakers have failed to clearly establish any wrongdoing on her part. He said, “Rivers House of Assembly wants to impeach Fubara’s deputy, even when they can’t really point out the offense she has committed.

“That’s why people think this is just a game meant to get the governor and deputy out of the way so that the speaker can become acting governor.”
Otitoju further explained that the situation reflects a broader political reality, noting that executive power becomes fragile once legislative support is lost.
Emphasising this point, he added, “The fact is clear. If you don’t have the support of the lawmakers, your days could actually be numbered. This was actually what happened to Balarabe Musa, who was governor of Kaduna State.”
