IBBUL Student Dies Amid Betting Losses, Rent Collection Pressure

A 300-level Computer Science student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), identified only as Kelvin, has reportedly died following severe financial pressures tied to betting and accommodation responsibilities.

Kelvin and a former roommate lived together during their first year at the university in 2024.

Last year, he chose to live alone, but they occasionally met or chatted on campus.

Kelvin had sought help with lodging payments, which had become difficult due to high costs. He was in Minna when news of his death reached others.

At Justice Lodge, located in the Student Villa area of Lapai, the landlord had made Kelvin caretaker of the lodge, assigning him to collect rent from students. Some of the funds he reportedly lost to betting.

Kelvin’s caretaker role involved managing rent collection for students residing in the off-campus lodge.

His situation worsened after allegedly losing a large sum of money in betting while under pressure to remit rent and settle other debts.

Before his death, Kelvin had transferred N100,000 to the landlord and intended to send the remaining balance when a virtual bank network was restored. At the time, he reportedly had N570,000 before making the partial transfer.

Kelvin’s financial troubles extended beyond betting losses and rent obligations.

He had accumulated debts from funds collected from other students for accommodation arrangements, acting as a housing agent while attending school.

As of press time, IBBUL management had not issued an official statement. Attempts to reach the University Chief Security Officer, Abdulkadir Yerima, and Wasiu Abiodun, Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, were unsuccessful.
