The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has won the contract to construct a 7-megawatt floating solar power station for the University of Lagos (UNILAG), marking a major step toward renewable energy adoption in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
The project, which will be located on water within the UNILAG campus, is designed to provide a sustainable and reliable power supply to the university while reducing dependence on fossil fuels and diesel-powered generators. Floating solar technology also helps conserve land space and improves energy efficiency by reducing panel overheating.
Officials say the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to expand renewable energy capacity, cut carbon emissions, and lower energy costs across public institutions. When completed, the 7MW plant is expected to significantly boost electricity availability for academic, research, and residential facilities at UNILAG.

CCECC, a major Chinese construction firm with a strong presence in Nigeria’s infrastructure sector, is expected to deliver the project in line with international standards. Further details on the project timeline and commissioning date are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
The development is being widely welcomed as a milestone in Nigeria’s transition to clean energy and a model for similar projects across universities and public institutions nationwide.
