Rivers Court Orders Indefinite Adjournment In Fubara, Deputy Impeachment Suit

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ordered an indefinite adjournment of the suit filed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Nma-Odu, challenging impeachment proceedings initiated against them by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Justice Florence Fiberesima of the Oyigbo High Court delivered the ruling on Friday, January 23, 2026, placing the matter on hold without fixing a return date.

The decision effectively stalls the impeachment process pending further legal developments.

Governor Fubara and his deputy approached the court after the House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, alongside 26 other lawmakers and the Clerk of the House, commenced impeachment steps earlier in the month.

The impeachment process formally began on Wednesday, January 8, 2026, when lawmakers served notices of alleged gross misconduct on the governor and his deputy.

The allegations included claims of budgetary infractions and failure to properly engage the legislature on appropriation matters.

On Thursday, January 16, 2026, the court issued interim orders restraining the Chief Judge of Rivers State from receiving, considering, or acting on any request to constitute a seven-member investigative panel, pending the determination of the suits.

The Chief Judge subsequently declined to act on the Assembly’s request, citing the subsisting court orders and ongoing legal proceedings.

The case forms part of the wider political crisis in Rivers State, marked by growing tension between the executive arm of government and the Amaewhule-led House of Assembly.

With the suit now adjourned indefinitely, the impeachment process remains suspended, leaving its fate to be determined by the outcome of the legal challenges before the courts.
