The Kano State Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services, Air Vice-Marshal Ibrahim Umar (retd.), has formally resigned from his role, effective immediately.
Umar communicated his decision through a resignation letter addressed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, a copy of which was shared with journalists in Kano on Monday, the 26th of January, 2026.
In the letter, the retired air force officer cited the worsening political relationship between Governor Yusuf and his long-time mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as a key factor behind his resignation.
He expressed appreciation to the governor for appointing him first as Director General of the Special Services Directorate in June 2023, and subsequently as Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services. Umar described it as an honour to be entrusted with the responsibility of protecting lives and property in Kano State.
Nonetheless, he noted that recent political developments made it necessary for him to step aside “in the interest of peace and good governance.”
Umar said his tenure was guided by the principles of the Kwankwasiyya movement, which he described as upholding “justice, discipline, and service to the people.” He emphasized that his resignation was not made lightly but came “after deep reflection.”

Despite stepping down, the former commissioner pledged to continue supporting the Kano State government and its initiatives aimed at creating a safer and more prosperous state. He also expressed gratitude for having had the chance to contribute to the security and well-being of residents, “even if only in a small way.”
In concluding his letter, Umar prayed for “wisdom, strength, and good health for Governor Yusuf” as he continues to lead the state. He also offered prayers for Kano State and “the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
His resignation comes amid escalating political tensions in Kano, following recent developments within the state’s ruling political structure.
